Katrina, from Belfast, was diagnosed with a brain tumour when she was 11 years old. She was supported by a CLIC Sargent Youth Worker.
Katrina’s treatment for her brain tumour has affected her balance, so she uses a wheelchair or a walking frame to get about. Her old friends didn’t want to know, but her CLIC Sargent Youth Worker Angie helped to open up a whole new world.
“Treatment for my brain tumour means I haven’t got great balance anymore. I’m in a wheelchair or use a frame to get about. It meant I had to go to a Special Needs School,” 19-year-old Katrina explains.
As well as finding cancer tough emotionally, young people have distinct physical needs too. CLIC Sargent Youth Workers know exactly what young people like Katrina have been through. They are someone to confide in about treatment, their feelings and practical things like going back to school, college or work.
Katrina’s Youth Worker is Angie Fee “she’s great, she fixes up a monthly social,
we went bowling last time. I can talk really easily to Angie, she understands… and
we have a great laugh too.”
