Katy, 11, was diagnosed with leukaemia just before Christmas 2005. Her mum, Kim explains: "I took Katy to the doctors because she wasn't quite herself. They originally thought it was glandular fever but a blood test, taken just in case, revealed something quite different - something we weren't expecting."
Within four days Katy was in Bristol Children's hospital having chemotherapy. Katy stayed in hospital for four months and during that time her dad stayed at the CLIC Sargent Home from Home around the corner, CLIC House.
Katy's dad, Richard, says: "CLIC House is like a godsend. I was able to stay there
in the week, and visit Katy on the ward. Then, at weekends, Katy's mum and her brother
Josh were able to come up to Bristol and stay with me. "I never imagined that CLIC
house would be as homely as it is. I was expecting a B&B. At the weekends we
were able to cook ourselves a Sunday lunch, and relish some space and privacy away
from the hospital ward."
